“Super Mario Bros. 2” is a unique entry in the Super Mario series, first released in North America in 1988 for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). This game stands out from its predecessor and subsequent entries in the series due to its distinctive gameplay and origins.

Originally, “Super Mario Bros. 2” was not designed as a Mario game. It began as a title called “Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic” in Japan and was later rebranded and modified for the Western market as a Mario game, due to concerns that the original “Super Mario Bros. 2” released in Japan was too difficult and too similar to the first game for the American audience. This explains why “Super Mario Bros. 2” in the West differs significantly from the traditional Mario gameplay formula.

The game introduces players to a dream world known as Subcon and allows them to choose from four characters: Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool (Peach), and Toad.
